TALLINN, February 16, 2012 – Leading high throughput baseband modem provider Modesat Communications has released a modem for E-band and V-band applications with 400% higher spectrum efficiency compared to solutions on the market today. The new modem achieves 2 Gbps data throughput in a 250MHz channel and can be further scaled to reach 8 Gbps. The modem is compatible with Sivers IMA’s V-Band and E-band converters, making it a readily available solution for OEMs entering the most dynamic backhaul market segment.

Modesat’s new modem represents a highly integrated baseband solution incorporating an adaptive coding and modulation feature for robust communication; powerful LDPC forward error correction for improved threshold performance; adaptive pre-distortion; I/Q imbalance compensation; support for multiple Gigabit Ethernet ports; SyncE; and 1588v2. Optionally, the modem can be supplied with an internal Carrier Ethernet switch for enhanced networking capabilities, or interfaced with an external unit.

“In the era where mobile data traffic is growing more than 150% a year, we will rapidly approach the point where network backhaul capacity has to support several Gigabits of data. In the traditional microwave domain (the dominant backhaul technology today) available channel bandwidth and throughput is limited. Ultra high frequency bands such as the E-band allow effective spectrum reuse and therefore scalability beyond Gigabit” said Bernard Xavier, CEO of Modesat. “Through Modesat’s breakthrough modem technology, coupled with industry leading mm-wave module solutions by our partners from Sivers IMA, we intend to provide building blocks for our OEM customers to quickly enter the E-band and V-band market segment and at very competitive price points”.

Modesat will announce the industry’s highest capacity wideband modem in Barcelona at the World Mobile Congress, where a demonstration link will be set up using modem evaluation boards and Sivers IMA mm-wave modules. Modesat invites interested companies to register for the meeting and demo at http://www.modesat.com/category/events/.

The new modem will become available to customers for evaluation and testing starting in April 2012. For further product information and inquiries please contact sales@modesat.com.

SAN DIEGO, US, March 11, 2011 – Modesat Communications Inc., a subsidiary of Modesat Communications, has announced the commencement of its operations in San Diego, US. With this step, Modesat Communications has expanded its Engineering Centre to two locations – one in Tallinn, Estonia, and the second one in San Diego.

“Expanding our operations to San Diego is a noteworthy step – having the Engineering Centre in world-class electronics cluster enables to benefit from local top notch engineering resource and be also closer to our US customers” said Mr Peep Põldsamm, CEO and the President of Modesat Communications. “As our business model requires our significant involvement in customer modem design, having separate engineering team based in San Diego helps to ensure our availability in the US, but also find best people to match the challenging design requirements of our customers. US subsidiary is the first step towards our global expansion, and very soon we hope to see similar presence in Asia”.

Large scale migration towards LTE, UMB and 802.16m require substantial increases in aggregated backhaul capacities, and cost efficient and high throughput backhaul solutions are demanded by the market. With congested frequency resource at lower frequencies, strong interest towards higher frequencies will drive the market further. Modesat has positioned itself to be a partner to all OEMs, who are looking forward such high capacity point to point radios, and are willing to maintain control over their design to outperform thier competitors.

BARCELONA, Spain February 14, 2011 – At Barcelona Mobile World Congress 2011, Modesat Communications revealed a new 1024QAM adaptive modem, which supports up to 820 Mbps in single low cost FPGA. Bringing greater capacity to next generation wireless backhaul and access radio equipment manufacturers and telecom operators, the modem supplements the Modesat’s PilotSyncTM based microwave radio portfolio.

“While 2G and 2.5G networks required 18-100 Mbps capacity at base station collector points, the new LTE based networks require at least 500 Mbps, and with next releases of LTE versions already 1-3 Gbps” said Peep Põldsamm, President and CEO of Modesat. “Also, capacity requirements towards transportation between individual base stations and collector points have risen significantly. All in all, we see at least 25 times of difference”.

256QAM based modem solutions with data rates up to 311 Mbps have become already industry-standard for point to point microwave radios. However, this capacity is not sufficient for addressing the backhaul bottlenecks in cost efficient way. “We are in constant search for higher capacity, and there are basically two significant physical characteristics that define capacity – it is the modulation rate and channel spacing. We have addressed both – our new modem supports up to 112MHz of channel spacing, and 1024QAM modulation” commented Dr Sanguoon Chung, CTO of Modesat Communications. “This is the highest capacity single chip solution on the market today”.

1024QAM modem has been designed keeping in mind stringent phase noise tolerance and low latency requirements that accompany new all-IP based networks. The modem supports adaptive coding and modulation, ATPC, Ethernet, including Jumbo frames.

TALLINN, ESTONIA December 08, 2010 – Modesat Communications, a point-to-point radio modem solutions developer, secured 1.85 million EUR in A round funding to place its broadband wireless transmission products to global market.

The investment is jointly committed by existing shareholder Ambient Sound Investments, an investment vehicle formed by 4 former lead engineers of Skype, the Estonian Development Fund, a national VC fund, and privately owned financial investor Bellus. A total investment is 1.85 million EUR, which will help company in expanding its operations and introduce new generation of modems in microwave and millimeter wave radio field.

“Although point to point broadband radio market has generally suffered in 2008 and 2009 due to abrupt dip in telecom investments, there were still segments where growth rates were triple digit. Such areas are for instance high capacity hybrid radios, which bridge legacy and future IP based networks, as well as pure Ethernet based radios” said Peep Põldsamm, CEO of Modesat Communications. “In 2010 and onwards we expect the market to recover, and see demand for high capacity radios to grow even further. To be able to serve this demand, we need to expand both in terms of stronger market presence as well as product selection”.

“Modesat Communications has a good market potential, where rapidly increasing demand at long time-to-market is sustaining OEMs interest towards company’s products” said Mr Andrus Oks, the representative of Estonian Development Fund.

Modesat develops and provides FPGA-based high capacity modulator-demodulator IP Cores and SoC (System-on-Chip) solutions for TDM, Hybrid and Ethernet Radios based on its patented PilotSyncTM technology. Modesat products are software upgradable to account for future requirements, and hence are designed to support longer life cycle of radio units.
