- 13.11.2008 - Modesat unveils first adaptive 256QAM modem for microwave radio with patented PilotSync™ technology
TALLINN, Estonia, November 13, 2008 - Modesat Communications, a developer of leading-edge modem technology, today unveiled its portfolio of DSP Core products for next generation microwave radio modems utilizing its patented PilotSync™ technology. PilotSync™ provides significantly higher data throughput and communication link reliability at lower hardware cost in microwave radio, satellite and cable modem applications.
An important obstacle in migrating towards higher throughput in wireless and wired communications is related to interdependency between modulation and synchronization. Higher order modulation schemes have required complex synchronization algorithms, which in turn necessitate complicated and expensive hardware design. The PilotSync™ technology decouples synchronization from the modulation scheme used by introducing a reference pilot tone within the signal frequency band, resulting in major functional and economic advantages.
"Drastically increasing demand for ultra-broadband fixed and mobile access services is forcing operators to quickly multiply the capacity of their backhaul networks," said Mr. Peep Põldsamm, President and CEO of Modesat Communications. "We believe that we are in the right place at the right time with our products and revolutionary technology."
The new technology significantly increases data throughput by permitting the use of adaptive high order modulations (256QAM or greater) without affecting the complexity and stability of the synchronization technique. Operation even at very poor communication link conditions (down to SNR as low as -6 dB) is made possible by linearization of the synchronization algorithm. This also ensures high reliability by very fast carrier, symbol, AGC and equalizer signal recovery.
PilotSync™ technology realizes cost savings by enabling simpler hardware design and greater signal coverage area. According to Danil Shendrik, Director of Technology and R&D at Modesat Communications, the new technology could find application in many fixed and mobile terrestrial and satellite communications systems, including point-to-point microwave radio, satellite broadband access for aircraft and high-speed trains as well as cable modem and wireless Gigabit Ethernet networks.
Modesat’s DSP Core products include modulator/demodulator IP Core solutions for different adaptive modulation schemes from QPSK to 256QAM, supplemented with several FEC and interface options.
Modesat’s new technology will be available to telecom operators through communication equipment and solution providers worldwide.
