- 16.03.2009 - Modesat launches industry’s first-ever 1024QAM adaptive modem
With quantum leap in modem technology, Modesat Communications brings a new horizon to radio link OEMs
TEL AVIV, March 16, 2009 – At the Tel Aviv Technology Show 2009, Modesat Communications will today reveal a new 1024QAM adaptive modem, a step change in modem technology. Bringing greater capacity to next generation wireless backhaul and access radio equipment manufacturers and telecom operators, the modem supplements the Modesat’s PilotSyncTM microwave and Gigabit Ethernet radio portfolio that was launched with the 256QAM modem last November.

“In recognition of Israel’s leadership in microwave and Gigabit Ethernet radio, the new modem will be first revealed and demonstrated at the Tel Aviv Technology Show,” said Peep Põldsamm, President and CEO of Modesat. “Through our local representative, many Israeli companies have already expressed intense interest in exploring and testing this new technology.” Modesat, a developer and provider of innovative high-throughput modem technology and products, last week announced a partnership with RFcell Technologies, a leading Israeli agencies company in the radio-frequency (RF) market.
Modesat develops and provides FPGA-based high capacity modulator-demodulator DSP Cores and SoC (System-on-Chip) solutions for PDH/SDH and Gigabit Ethernet Radio based on its patented PilotSyncTM technology. This new technology significantly increases data throughput by permitting the use of high order adaptive modulation schemes (1024QAM or greater), maintaining operability at very poor communication link conditions (down to SNR as low as -6 dB) and ensuring high reliability. PilotSyncTM technology also reduces Bill of Material (BOM) for the producers due to the lower energy consumption and simple electronic design.
Demand for broadband mobile services is not expected to be substantially affected by the global slowdown, and the introduction of new mobile phones and handheld devices will stimulate the broader use of 3G/4G services. However, the global economy will push for further cost reductions and better efficiency of backhaul networks.
It is estimated that European carriers will spend approximately $270 billion to upgrade their networks for 3G services. In the United States and Asia 2.5G/3G upgrade expenditures may exceed $100 billion and $50 billion, respectively.
“Israeli companies, which are known for cutting edge technologies in the fields of microwave, Gigabit Ethernet, satellite as well as defense communications will be challenging, evaluating and validating the PilotSyncTM technology over the coming months,” Roy Saar, Managing Director at RFcell said. “We have created a huge interest among the Israeli radio communication equipment makers - they are looking forward to validating this quantum leap technology for themselves,” confirmed Oded Zadok, Technical Director at RFcell.
