With scarce spectrum availability sub-40 GHz, the possibility of migrating to 1 Gbps and significantly above that are physically restricted. The common channel spacing in those frequencies is maximum of 56MHz, with expected adoption of 112MHz (ETSI) soon. For FCC regulated markets, 80 MHz is still maximum channel spacing. Only when frequency spectrum redistribution will happen in this lower frequency domain, several Gbps data rates become feasible.
However, with the opening of 250MHz channel spacings in upper millimeter wave domain such as 80 MHz, Gigabit data rates can be easily reached by adopting digital modulations. Although phase noises and linearities affect significantly more the performance of a radio at that high frequency, 32QAM and 64QAM modulation rates are achievable and with this, 1,5 Gbps in single channel is doable. By deploying several parallel 250MHz channels due to ease of licensing in this domain and reuse of spectrum, data rates can be scaled up to 10 Gbps.
Modesat Communications will release its single channel Gigabit radio in Q3 on Evaluation Board, and can supply interested customers with test platform since October 2011. Please contact our sales team via request form on the right.
